A well-designed training programme for weavers

Gandhigram Rural University conducted a special training programme in designing and dyeing for handloom weavers on its premises recently.

The participants were tutored on designing extra warp, weft, jacquard and embroidery methods through practical demonstrations. They were also exposed to computer aided textile designing. The weavers also got an opportunity to weave the designs developed by them in looms. They practiced on scouring, bleaching, direct dyeing and reactive colours for silk dyeing.

Besides, weavers learnt block printing, screen-printing on cotton materials. Demonstration was also shown on application of natural and vegetable dyes on cotton textiles. A total of 30 weavers of Paramakudi took part.

The Nehru Yuva Kendra had organised a special trekking programme for rural youth at Oddanchatram near Dindigul on Saturday in order to create awareness of protection of forest wealth. More than 150 young men and women and NYK volunteers climbed up the Pachalur hills from Oddanchatram forest check post and reached Adalur on Wednesday.

A special training programme in trekking conducted by the Fire and Rescue Services personnel at Oddanchatram hills helped participants to equip them emotionally, mentally and physically for the trip. Majority of them were first time trekkers. Many volunteers, who could not express their joy, stated that it would be a different but strange and unforgettable experience. A Forest Watcher and a team of doctors accompanied the trekking team.

NSS volunteers of Parvathy's Arts and Science College in association with the Rotary Club of Dindigul Mid Town had conducted special cattle camp at Ponnimandurai village, near Dindigul town recently. A total of 421 cattle, 284 goat and 324 calves were screened during the camp. The Assistant Director, Department of Animal Husbandry, V. Rajagopal supervised the camp.

The Department of Business Administration, S.F.R. College for Women, Sivakasi, conducted an one-day women entrepreneurial development camp recently. The meeting attracted about 175 women. While some were members of self-help groups, there was combination of housewives and working women also. Bina Rajasingh of Bell Group of Industries inaugurated the programme. M. Jegadeeswari, Head of the Department, welcomed the gathering. Women entrepreneurs spoke on the topics `Investment - no barrier for entrepreneurship' and `Scope for women entrepreneurship in Virudhunagar district.'

The college also held a training programme in `Vedathiri Maharishi's Kayakalpam' and simplified yoga in association with its alumnae association. About 65 students participated in this programme, which was conducted by Arulnithi V. Muthulakshmi of World Community Service Centre.

A ten-day special camp on `Healthy youth for healthy India' was conducted for National Service Scheme units 192 and 209 of Sri Kaliswari College, Sivakasi. The camp was conduced between December 3 and 12 at Anaikuttam village. K. Rajakumar, principal, spoke about the activities of the camp at its inaugural function held at the village. Awareness programmes on several important issues such as AIDS, Right to Information Act, women protection and human rights and eyecare were also held. K. Rathika Devi, Chairman, Sivakasi municipality, presided over the valedictory function.
