Women heckle MCH officials at the new community hall

  • Officials questioned over poor civic amenities
  • MCH flayed for neglecting maintenance of parks

HYDERABAD: A visit to inaugurate four parks in East Marredpally turned out to be a stormy affair for Mayor T. Krishna Reddy and MCH officials on Wednesday when the local residents, especially women, began venting their ire on officials for inept management of their problems.

A group of women from Vaddara Basti heckled MCH officials when they entered the new community hall in the basti. "We don't have roads, drinking water and there is no garbage disposal scheme. There are no toilets for us and the situation has not improved here since past three years. What are you doing?" questioned the local women. A visibly embarrassed Mayor tried to avoid and dilute the situation by recalling that during the TDP regime under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu several welfare measures were taken up in the colonies.

    Slum development

The Mayor also promised to take up slum development programme under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM) to solve the problems in Vaddara Basti and Addagutta.

Residents of Dildar Colony, East Marredpally, came rushing towards the Mayor's convoy to let out their frustration. "There are no streetlights in our street since one year and we are forced to live in darkness. We tried to take up this matter with the Corporator but she has not done much," complained R. Chandrasekhar, a resident, much to embarrassment of the Mayor and Corporator C. Anita Badrinath Yadav.

The locals were also miffed by the MCH's stand on maintenance of colony parks. "MCH has agreed to provide Rs. 2,000 per month for each park for maintenance. It is very difficult to keep a tab on the security and maintenance without the help of the MCH. They are just offering us money and washing off their hands from the matter," said Marredpally Welfare Association Secretary N. Ramanathan.

    Agreement

The residents have decided not to enter into an agreement with MCH for maintenance of the parks till municipal officials promise constant inspection of the parks by MCH staff. The four parks, all in MCH's Division II of East Marredpally, were officially inaugurated by the Mayor on Wednesday.
