Eye hospital plans New Year campaign

Project envisages 10,000 free eye operations

CHENNAI : K.I.M. Lions Eye Hospital at T. Nagar, a project of the Lions Club of South Madras, will be ushering in the New Year in a unique way. The hospital will attempt to provide sight to thousands of people in 2007 with the launch of the `Netra Yagna' on Wednesday.

Inaugurating the project that envisaged performance of 10,000 free eye operations at a cost of about Rs.1.5 crore, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said that about 3.8 million people in the country were affected by cataract.

Lauding the efforts of the hospital, which has performed about 42,000 eye operations in a span of 33 years, the Governor honoured M.T. Ramesh, eye surgeon, and S. Kamala, chief matron and in-charge of the hospital with `Netra Ratna' and `Netra Bhushan' awards for their contribution.

Dr. Ramesh has performed about 20,000 intraocular eye operations in the hospital since 1996, and Ms. Kamala has served in the hospital for 25 years without taking leave.

The Governor, later, handed over donation cheques towards the hospital of about Rs. 8 lakh from organisations including Gujarati Mandal and L. Shanth Kumar, district governor, Lions District 324 A1 drawn from the district activity fund. Vasantlal C. Mehta, chairman of the hospital, said that from eye care alone earlier on, the hospital expanded to specialities such as ENT and plastic surgery.

V. Govind Krishna Das, chairman of organising committee of the club, participated in the function.
