KOCHI: Sr. Alice Lukose, director of Women's Initiative Network Centre at Alappuzha that works for empowering women and children of mainly fishworkers, has won the Justice Krishna Iyer Human Rights Award. The award will be presented on Friday by Rajinder Sachar, retired Delhi High Court Chief Justice and former president of People's Union for Civil Liberties, at a ceremony at V.R. Krishna Iyer's home. Sr. Alice, 56, who has been working for the welfare of fishworkers for three decades, set up the WIN Centre along with four other nuns in the 1990s with the support of Jesuits. Over the years, the centre made a difference to the lives of thousands of coastal women. The WIN Centre currently helps about 200 self-help groups of women to empower their members economically, socially and psychologically. Sr. Alice, known for her advocacy and practice of the concept of `liberation theology' in the Seventies and Eighties, had shot to fame in 1977 with her 15-day hunger strike for the cause of fishermen in Kozhikode. Alice Kuriakose was born to a wealthy rubber planter's family in Kottayam district. After a law degree and a year's stay in Paris, she decided to become a nun and joined the Sisters of the Assumption, an order originated in France.
