MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has fixed meters on one lakh electric transformers to detect power loss, Chief Engineer K.V. Ramasamy has said. Addressing the valedictory function of National Energy Conservation Week here on Wednesday, Mr. Ramasamy said that meters have been fixed on one lakh transformers in the State, including 10, 767 in Madurai region. Besides, the board was also commissioning new substations, new electricity routes and replacing non-functional meters to arrest power loss. The present power generation capacity in the country was 1.24 lakh megawatt (MW) and the power consumption was going up by 4.8 per cent every year. Quoting Nobel laureate Richard E. Smalley, the Chief Engineer said that power would be first of the 10 worst problems the world would be facing in the next 50 years. The Government was spending Rs. 4 crore to Rs. 6 crore for generating one MW of power. The country had limited coal and gas resources. Besides, it was spending Rs. 1,20,000 crore in foreign exchange for importing oil. Hence, it was imperative to look at non-conventional sources of energy. Stressing the need to conserve power, Mr. Ramasamy said that the nation could save Rs. 20,000 crore by adopting various methods of power conservation. He urged the people to use energy efficient devices. T. Babunath Malli, Additional Chief Engineer, Metro Circle, and M.E. Venkatachalam, Superintending Engineer, also spoke.
