THE DEPARTMENT of Management Studies of Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College of Engineering has initiated a mandatory "Community Internship Programme" for MBA students. For this purpose, the college has signed memorandums of understanding with two non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Helping Hand and Dream School Foundation, both of which will play the role of lead NGOs for the internship programme. It is a three-week intensive management training course designed to expose MBA students to a variety of social and economic challenges facing today's underprivileged population. Here's how the college authorities explain the rationale behind the internship: "At the end of the project, the students will have a sense of accomplishment, community involvement and a greater sensitivity to those less fortunate. They will develop a greater awareness of societal problems and experience positive change in personal value and orientation." In turn, this is expected to help hone the students' leadership skills and provide them with a competitive advantage in their careers.
