Community internship must for MBA students

THE DEPARTMENT of Management Studies of Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College of Engineering has initiated a mandatory "Community Internship Programme" for MBA students.

For this purpose, the college has signed memorandums of understanding with two non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Helping Hand and Dream School Foundation, both of which will play the role of lead NGOs for the internship programme.

It is a three-week intensive management training course designed to expose MBA students to a variety of social and economic challenges facing today's underprivileged population. Here's how the college authorities explain the rationale behind the internship: "At the end of the project, the students will have a sense of accomplishment, community involvement and a greater sensitivity to those less fortunate. They will develop a greater awareness of societal problems and experience positive change in personal value and orientation."

In turn, this is expected to help hone the students' leadership skills and provide them with a competitive advantage in their careers.

DBA programme

The Los Angeles-based International American University (IAU) has collaborated with the Gupta College of Management and Technology (GcMAT) here to offer three management programmes, including Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), Executive MBA (for people with work experience) and MBA. The DBA degree is equivalent to the traditional Ph.D (Doctor of Philosophy). But the DBA differs in its focus on the interaction between the theoretical and applied aspects of management knowledge. The Executive MBA is an intensive, advanced business administration programme for executives, managers, entrepreneurs and business leaders. The course is catered to the needs of mid-career executives preparing for senior management. The course is of one-year duration and classes are conducted during weekends.

For more on the university, visit www.iau.la or call 9844077067.

Certificate course

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's H.B. College of Communication and Management and the HRD unit of Spastics Society of Karnataka are jointly offering a certificate course in "Early Childhood Education," a distance education programme for in-service professionals.

The duration of the course is six months and will be held from January to June 2007 with English as medium of instruction. Teachers from different "care centres", "pre-school" and early childhood centres are eligible to join the course. For details, call 9886670676.
