`Criminal' killed

NEW DELHI: An alleged criminal involved in over 20 cases of kidnapping and robbery was killed in an encounter with the police at Sarita Vihar in South Delhi on Wednesday.

Acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid near Jasola Sports Complex and the accused, Yashveer Fauji, was intercepted when he reached there in a vehicle. However, Yashveer allegedly fired at the police team and tried to flee. He was injured in the exchange of fire. He was taken to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences where he was declared dead on arrival. Yashveer was a sharpshooter allegedly working with the Sunder Bhatti gang.

Jewellery shop looted

NEW DELHI: Five armed men allegedly committed robbery in a jeweller's shop at Chota Bazaar in East Delhi on Wednesday.

According to the police, the men barged into a jewellery shop, Moti Jewellers, around 6-30 p.m. and fled with the some jewellery after threatening the owners with a gun. The shop is owned by Sumeet Gupta. Before escaping, the robbers fired in the air.

Robbery bid foiled

NEW DELHI: With the arrest of three young men, the East Delhi police claim to have foiled a robbery attempt at Ruchika petrol pump in Mayur Vihar Phase-III.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team conducted a raid at Samriti Van near Salvan School on Tuesday and arrested them. Two of their accomplices managed to flee.

During interrogation, the accused, Pratap, Arjun and Babloo, purportedly confessed to having committed several robberies in the surrounding areas.

Nabbed for extortion

NEW DELHI: Four men allegedly running an extortion racket have been arrested by the South Delhi police. Acting on a tip-off, a police team arrested the men near Ashram Chowk. They were extorting money from truck drivers posing as sales tax officials. One of their accomplices managed to flee. During interrogation, the accused, Arif, Faizul, Naeem and Shahid Khan, purportedly confessed to having extorted money from many truck drivers.
