Balachander working on AIDS film

Staff Reporter

Director wants to remove stigma attached to the disease

CHENNAI : Noted film director K. Balachander said that he was working on a film on HIV/AIDS to remove the stigma attached to the disease.

"I am working on the script now," Mr. Balachander announced at a musical programme organised by Genesis Welfare Trust, which works for HIV positive people.

The director said that he had made films on disability, cancer and kidney failure and now wanted to address the topic of AIDS.

"Speak out"

He urged HIV positive people to speak out on issues that concerned them. Welfare organisations should distribute information pamphlets by the thousands to improve awareness, he said.

Genesis Welfare Trust presented cheques to the Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur branches of Indian Network for People Living with HIV/AIDS.

The trust's general secretary R. Thangathurai said that HIV positive people would benefit from the proceeds of the musical programme titled `Vaalkai Vazhvatherkay' (Live life).

A comedy show by Devakottai Ramanathan, entertainment with magic and a Red Ribbon Club skit were performed on the occasion. The Saadhaga Paravaigal troupe brought film music for the audience. Playback singer Mano sang `Puthamputhu bhoomi vendum' (we want a new world), a song from Thiruda Thiruda, in honour of HIV positive people.
