CHENNAI: Popular media such as radio and television should make greater efforts to promote traditional Tamil music, as against film music, Uttar Pradesh Governor T.V. Rajeswar, said on Thursday.

Music festival

inaugurated

Songs composed by Musiri Subramania Iyer and Papanasam Sivan could be heard only during the December music season, due to the onslaught of film music, he said, during the inauguration of the 64th annual music festival of the Tamil Isai Sangam here.

The Governor also conferred the `Tamil Isai Peraringnar' title on Bombay sisters, C. Saroja and C.Lalitha.

Disappeared Tamil kritis

Thousands of Tamil kritis had disappeared over time and the trend could be reversed only due to the efforts taken by Rajah Annamalai Chettiar and later by his descendants, P.R. Gokulakrishnan, president of the Sangam said.

From a period of slump, Tamil music was in a revival phase now, thanks to efforts taken by the Sangam, A.R. Lakshmanan, Supreme Court judge, said.

A.C. Muthiah, honorary secretary of the Sangam, also participated.
