CHENNAI: The Department of Public Relations, Stella Maris College, has put in place a series of initiatives to make its students environment-conscious. "At a time when corporates are taking the issue of corporate social responsibility seriously, study initiatives in environment-linked sustainable development and allied subjects have gained added importance. The initiative is aimed at making our students carriers of messages on issues such as women, environment and children," K. Sundari, academic dean of the college and Head of the Public Relations department, said during the valedictory of a two-day students' conference on `Environment and Community,' organised by the department and the United States Educational Foundation in India on Wednesday. The project is partnered by Covenant Centre for Development, a Madurai-based NGO. The conference was an outcome of various field trips and surveys undertaken by the students in villages in and around Madurai. While Kausalya Devi, Honorary Consul of France in Chennai, spoke about the French Government's championing of environmental issues, R. Seethalakshmi of USEFI outlined the various initiatives taken by the foundation on promoting Fulbright fellowships in India.
