Lalu's acquittal

This refers to the editorial "Arduous road to exoneration" (Dec. 20). The acquittal of Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi in the disproportionate assets case is a shot in the arm for the former Chief Ministers of Bihar and the UPA dispensation at the Centre. The verdict is particularly significant as the Government could ill-afford to lose a staunch and reliable ally, soon after the exit of Shibu Soren. Now that he has been exonerated, Mr. Prasad would do well to concentrate on the far more important task of building the fortunes of the Railways, as the helmsman of which he has distinguished himself.

J. Anantha Padmanabhan,
Srirangam

The news of Mr. Prasad's acquittal would have come as a relief to his supporters and the UPA Government, which enjoys his support. I wonder though how the Minister, who praised god and the judiciary, and affirmed his faith in the latter, would have reacted had the verdict been otherwise.

V. Balasubramanian,
Chennai
