A blow

The report that 1000 Dalits of Keredagada village in Orissa are contemplating conversion to Buddhism is a major blow to Hinduism and Indian society. (The entry of Dalits in the 300-year-old Jagannath temple on Thursday last provoked protests from the `upper' castes and suspension of rituals in the temple. It was resolved following the administration's intervention). It is unfortunate that in the era of globalisation, caste continues to divide us.

Sandeep Kumar Sethi,
Dhenkanal, Orissa

It is unfortunate that even today such discriminatory practices exist among Hindus in some places. Such humiliation will only result in Dalits embracing other religions where they get respect and are treated as equals. When the world is marching forward and countries are coming together to bury their differences, continuance of such practices in the name of caste is deplorable.

E.S. Sundararajan,
Chennai
