BIJAPUR: The Broadgauge Monitoring Committee, a pressure group consisting of local citizens, claims that the South Western Railway is committed to completing the gauge conversion between Bagalkot and Gadag, the only stretch left out on the Sholapur-Gadag line, by October next year. In a statement released here, office-bearers of the committee Vishwanath Bhavi and D.L. Kulkarni, said an assurance to this effect came from Trilokinath Parthi, General Manager of SWR, Hubli, when a delegation from the committee met him on Tuesday. The members drew his attention to the slow pace of work on the Holealur Bridge across the Malaprabha, and expressed concern that it may cause an indefinite delay in completing the broadgauge project. However, Mr. Parthi allayed their fears and said the SWR planned to complete the broadgauge by the end of October 2007. He reportedly assured the delegation that one more local train would be introduced on the Sholapur-Bijapur-Bagalkot route within a month. Bagwan Reddy, Mallamma Yalwar, Chandrakanth Hiremath, Chandrakanth Bijjaragi, Raju Gacchinamath and M.K. Kadi were the other members in the delegation.
