Farmer ends life

ANANTAPUR: Distress caused by successive failure of crop and the resultant burden of piling up debt (Rs. 2 lakhs) allegedly forced G. Sreeramulu (55), a farmer of Rekulakunta in Bukkaraya Samudram mandal, to commit suicide by consuming a pesticide in his house on Thursday. - Staff Reporter

`Withhold promotions'

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Municipal Employees' Association on Thursday urged Chief Minister Y.S. 26 kg of ganja seized

KADAPA: The Duvvur police arrested two persons and seized 26 kg of ganja from them at Bayannapalle in Duvvur mandal on Thursday. Meanwhile, the police intercepted a jeep near Goriswamy dargah, near Old Duvvur, and seized 40 red sander logs worth Rs. 1 lakh. - Staff Reporter

Water shortage hits girls hostel

KURNOOL: The girls' hostel complex near Collectorate in the city is reeling under acute water shortage. The complex houses four hostels with a capacity of 600 students. According to reports, the borewell failed four days ago and repairs was estimated to cost Rs. 30,000. The matrons could not take a decision as it involved a huge expenditure and the Deputy Director of Social Welfare is away. The students started vacating the hostels unable to cope with the water shortage. - Staff Reporter

Constable's wife ends life

ANANTAPUR: Wife of a police constable allegedly committed suicide by hanging at Azadanagar here on Wednesday. Zareena alias Haseena (18), took the extreme step allegedly due to harassment by her husband and in-laws for additional dowry. Haseena was married to the constable identified as Dada Peer six months ago. Her parents reportedly gave Rs. 3 lakh in cash, 10 tolas of gold jewellery and a motorbike as dowry. The police registered a case under Section 304 (B) of the IPC. - Staff Reporter

MP hands over land to school

KADAPA: Kadapa MP Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy handed over documents of 5.94 acres of land required for Kasturba residential girls school at Vemula to incharge principal Ramachandraiah on Wednesday. The YSR Foundation had purchased the land near Vemula electrical sub-station at a cost of Rs. 1.80 lakhs and got it registered in the school's name, the MP said. - Staff Reporter

RTA plans special drive

CHITTOOR: The Regional Transport Authority will launch a special drive to prevent road accidents, Deputy Transport Commissioner Mohan told reporters on Thursday. He said that traffic rules would be strictly enforced. He said action would be taken as per law against those driving two-wheelers without helmets. Drivers have been asked to wear seat belts and speed limit has been specified for school buses and maxicabs. - Correspondent
