INDORE: Pemba Tamang fired an impressive 295 out of 300 in the duelling series to take the gold medal in the men's 25m centre-fire pistol event of the 50th National shooting championship at the Reoti Ranges, near here, on Thursday. Tamang started with a 291 in the precision series along with his army teammates Mahavir Singh and Vijay Kumar. In the rapid series, as it is also known, Tamang outdid his challengers by scoring 586 after an intense round which saw one of the target machines malfunctioning. Mahavir finished with 585 to take the silver medal, while Vijay settled for the bronze with 584. Another army shooter, C.K. Choudhary, who was in the top spot with a 293 in the precision round, faltered in the duelling round (282) and went out of the reckoning. Commonwealth shooting star, Samaresh Jung, who has won two gold medals so far, was nowhere in contention. His precision series produced just 283 on Wednesday, and a duelling round of 290 hardly helped his cause. Army won the team gold by a clear margin with Mahavir, Choudhary and Vijay in its ranks. Army was 19 points clear of the second-placed Maharashtra, represented by Amol Chauhan, Ronak Pandit and Ashok Pandit. A day after the Navy shooters dominated the rifle events, Army shot back by sweeping the medals. The results (figures in parenthesis are scores in precision and duelling): Men: Centre-fire pistol: 1. Pemba Tamang (Army) (291, 295) 586, 2. Mahavir Singh (Army) (291, 294) 585, 3. Vijay Kumar (Army) (291, 293) 584. Team: 1. Army (Mahavir Singh, C.K. Choudhary, Vijay Kumar) 1744, 2. Maharashtra (Amol Chauhan, Ronak Pandit, Ashok Pandit) 1725, 3. BSF (Poonam Kumar, Naresh Kumar, Mahender Singh) 1703. Juniors: 1. Ravi Kumar (Army) 573, 2. Hambir Singh (Army) 569, 3. Pushpinder Singh (Army) 568.
