ANANTAPUR: The town unit of All-India Youth Federation (AIYF) on Thursday staged a dharna on the premises of Anantapur Municipal Corporation demanding improved sanitation and other basic amenities in the district headquarters town. Activists of the youth organisation affiliated to the CPI went in a rally to the civic body office from the party office. Addressing the protesters, AIYF leaders -- P.L. Narasimhulu, N. Sreeramulu P. Narayanaswamy, J. Raja Reddy -- and others alleged that sanitation in all the 50 divisions in the corporation had deteriorated in the recent months and helping breeding of mosquitoes.
Water problem
They urged the Municipal Corporation authorities to take up measures on a war footing to improve sanitation to keep the seasonal diseases at bay. They also asked the civic body to lay cement-concrete road in the unfinished reaches of the 80-feet Suryanagar road as residents adjacent to the road were suffering due to excessive dust. Drinking water problem was severe in several residential areas like Bhavani nagar, Shiridi nagar, Parvatamma colony, Chandra Rajeswara Rao colony, Vincent Ferrer Colony and otherareas. Streetlights were not functioning in several areas and the condition of roads was pathetic all over the town, they pointed out. They urged Mayor R. Parasuram to initiate measures to check corruption in the civic body, improve sanitation, arrange public urinals in different parts of the town, protect civic body's assents like parks and vacant sites and take up fogging to reduce the mosquito menace.
