CHANDIGARH: The State Government has drafted the Haryana Police Act, 2006, in compliance with Supreme Court directions to streamline the functioning of the Police Department. The State Cabinet, which met here on Fiday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, approved the Haryana Police Ordinance, 2006, as the State legislature is not in session. Later, addressing media persons, Mr. Hooda and State Chief Secretary Prem Prashant highlighted various provisions of the Act and said Haryana had become the first State in the country to have its own Police Act. "The Police Act, 1861, of pre-Independence era has become outdated," said Mr. Hooda.
Compliance
The Union Government had appointed a committee under the chairmanship of former Attorney-General Soli Sorabjee to draft a Model Police Act for the country. The committee had drafted the Model Police Act, 2006, which was circulated to the states for necessary action. As the Supreme Court had directed compliance with the directions by December 31 this year or till the framing of the legislation, the State Government has decided to issue the Haryana Police Ordinance, 2006. The main feature of this Ordinance is that there shall be one police service for the State constituted by the State Government under the Ordinance. It would include the Indian Police Service. - PTI.
