ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad High Court on Thursday directed the Uttar Pradesh Government to release the quantum of water released into the Ganga from the Arora dam to 1,500 cusecs per day. A two-judge Bench comprising justice A. N. Ray and Justice Ashok Bhusan also directed the District Magistrate of Kanpur to ensure that effluents from tanneries are not released into the Ganga and asked him to appear before the Court on the next date of hearing, January. The order was passed while hearing a writ petition filed by Swami Harichaitanya Brahmachariji of Allahabad who had moved the Court alleging that due to the alarming pollution level in the Ganga, millions of pilgrims would be deprived of having pure water for bathing during the Ardh Kumbh starting here on January 3. Earlier, on December 13, the State Advocate-General on behalf of the Government assured the Court that 1000 cusecs of water would be released into the Ganga from December 14. However, the next day, state Chief Secretary Naveen Chandra Bajpai, who was at Allahabad to review preparations for the Kumbh, said that the quantum might not remain constant at 1000 cusecs as releasing too much water may damage the pontoon bridges - PTI
