Over 100 women and children take out rally in support of their demands

BHUBANESWAR: Over 100 women and children under the banner of Voice for Child's Right (VCR) took out a rally demanding education for all and protection of child right in the State.

Activists, who joined the procession that originated from Master Canteen Square and stopped at lower PMG Square, were demanding establishment of schools for weaker sections of the society.

"The education has been commercialised from elementary level and the fee is so high that only rich can afford. It is right of every child to get quality education from the childhood and it is duty of the government to make the facility available," VCR convenor Uma Shankar Sahoo said.

Child right

He said the administration knowingly or unknowingly made children suffer by not providing basic education facilities and other infrastructures to ensure their better future. The issue of child right was pushed to backburner in tribal-dominated areas with people facing large-scale displacement after multi-national companies claimed their rights over natural resources, Mr. Sahoo alleged.

Contract farming

The activists also opposed contract-farming system. They said the system would have adverse impact on local economy.Mr. Sahoo claimed that the VCR was a state-level forum of non-government organisations and intellectuals who had been raising voices against violation of child right in Orissa.

The VCR was active in 19 districts for last two years, he claimed.
