NEW DELHI: Senior Supreme Court advocate R.K. Jain died here on Thursday morning following a massive heart attack. He was 62. He is survived by his wife Neelam, son Siddharth and daughter Shefali. A record six-time president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Mr. Jain began his career at Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. In 1971 he shifted to the Supreme Court in Delhi and worked his way up the legal ladder. An expert in criminal law and human rights, he was also a staunch advocate of speedy and fair trials. The first man to demand financial autonomy for the judiciary to make it independent and protect it from the influence of the executive and the legislature, Mr. Jain was also among the first lawyers to speak up against the death sentence. Mr. Jain suffered the heart attack while returning to Delhi by train from Parsvnath in Jharkhand. He was taken to hospital at Aligarh for treatment but was pronounced dead by the doctors. Later his body was brought to his Sector 14 Noida residence from Aligarh by road. His mortal remains will be consigned to flames at Nigambodh Ghat on Friday morning.
