19 abducted in Batticaloa, claims TamilNet

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: TamilNet has claimed that armed men, clad in military fatigues, abducted 19 persons — 16 boys and 3 girls — from a private bus en route to Colombo from Kattankudy at Korakallimadu in Kiran in Batticaloa district around 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

It said the abductions took place on the Kattankudy-Polonnaruwa route, heavily guarded by Sri Lanka Army soldiers.

Parents of six children lodged complaints with the police and alleged that the kidnappers, belonging to paramilitary cadres of the Karuna group, beat them up, TamilNet charged.

"3 civilians injured"

The Army said three civilians were injured in the LTTE-directed mortar and artillery fire at internally displaced centres in the government-controlled areas in Kiran and Kumburumulla. It said the Tigers were attempting to block people moving to Government-controlled areas through A15 main road.
