NEW DELHI: Amateur astronomers from various organisations will gather at Jantar Mantar here on Friday for public testing of the calibration on Samrat Yantra, the sun-dial, which will give time to two-second accuracy. Nehru Planetarium Director N. Rathnashree on Thursday said the public testing would involve amateur astronomers from Nehru Planetarium, Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE) and Amateur Astronomers Association of Delhi (AAAD). Beginning 9 a.m., the amateur astronomers will explain to the visitors the usage of all the Jantar Mantar instruments with special emphasis on Samrat Yantra calibration. School and college students have been invited to participate in the public testing of the calibration markings that have been done for every minute. The programme would continue till 5 p.m. Also, there will be a panel discussion from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Jantar Mantar with Professor Yashpal and Mridula Mukherjee, Director of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, being the chief guests. The panel will take up the issue of not only refined calibration but also steps to be taken to restore the monument, particularly the sun-dial. Dr. Rathnashree said the sun-dial had not received appreciation as an astronomical instrument.
