BANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Thursday said Kananda films, which earlier contributed to the development of Kannada language, on Thursday demonstrated how badly the language could be abused.

He was inaugurating the Suchitra Bengalooru International Film Festival organised by Suchitra Film Society in association with the State Government and Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Kumaraswamy, a film producer himself, took serious note of the increasing depiction of sex and violence in Kannada films. "There is a dearth of good Kannada films these days and there are hardly any films that an entire family can watch together. It is unfortunate that under the guise of public demand, the Kannada film industry is depicting obscenity and glorifying violence and revolution. Clean and good films with a message of goodness should be given to the audience," he said.

Referring to the recent crisis in the film industry following differences between producers and cine workers' federation, the Chief Minister wondered whether the problem was inevitable for the industry. "This dispute, which affected the entire industry, could have been avoided. Veterans from the industry should intervene and ensure that such problems do not arise in future," he said. The Government was aware of the industry's problems and was ready to discuss and find an amicable solution. "All efforts should be made to save and nurture Kannada film industry. Karnataka is first among the States to use the stringent provisions of the Goonda Act to curb the menace of piracy," he said.

He appealed to the Centre to organise the India International Film Festival in Bangalore next year.

The Chief Minister said the Government would allot houses to members of unorganised sector in the film industry.

Filmmaker Shyam Benegal said most of the States had their own film festivals and "this will give an impetus to new and independent films and filmmakers."
