Corrections and Clarifications

  • The heading of a report was "22 injured in Assam blasts" (December 22, 2006, page 1) while the text gave the figure as "23 persons". The heading is right, and refers to the 22 persons injured in two blasts. The twenty-third person was seriously injured in a shoot-out.

  • A promo on page 1 (December 22, 2006) was "Bill against Jallikattu (page 6)", while the full report ("Victim's father moves court to ban `jallikattu'") stated that the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had admitted a writ petition seeking a ban on "jallikattu", which is an attempt to hold a charging bull. The matter has been referred to a Division Bench already hearing similar petitions. The promo should have been "PIL against Jallikattu". (The error was in some editions.)

  • In a feature story "Striking similarities noted [between the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita]" (Tamil Nadu early edition, December 22, 2006, page 4) it was stated that Psalm 5:13 is: "His lips like lilies ... Dropping sweet-smelling myrrh." It should have been the Song of Solomon, Cant 5:13 which is: "His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers: his lips like lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh."

  • The heading of a report was "BSNL's bonanza" (December 22, 2006). It is not a bonanza for BSNL, but one for its customers. It should have been "Bonanza for BSNL's customers".

  • A factual error. A report "International airport work on track" (Karnataka, December 21, 2006, page 1) incorrectly stated that India's first greenfield airport is coming up near Devanahalli (Bangalore). The country's first greenfield airport is Kerala's Cochin International Airport Limited (Nedumbassery). President K.R. Narayanan formally inaugurated it on May 25, 1999, and the first inaugural flight, of Air India, took off on June 10, 1999.

  • In "[Cheteshwar] Pujara keeps Saurashtra in the hunt" ("Sport", December 20, 2006) — on the Group "A" Super League Ranji Trophy match at Rajkot — the strapline stated that Pujara is a southpaw and the text said that he is a lefthander. It was an editing error. Pujara is a right-handed batsman.
