Jayasuriya sees Sri Lanka through

Wellington : Sanath Jayasuriya blazed an unbeaten half-century to steer Sri Lanka to victory over New Zealand in their rain-affected Twenty20 international in Wellington on Friday.

Under the Duckworth-Lewis system, Sri Lanka won by 18 runs after New Zealand made 162 for eight and Sri Lanka was 62 for one after 5.5 overs.

Jayasuriya smashed a six and 10 boundaries to reach 51 not out off just 23 balls after taking three for 21 with the ball.

Sri Lanka lost Upul Tharanga early in its reply but with the weather closing in, Jayasuriya launched into the New Zealand bowlers.

Earlier, the Kiwis made a flying start when Brendan McCullum (39) and Stephen Fleming (38) blasted 80 for the opening wicket only to lose their way.

Brief scores: New Zealand 162 for eight in 20 overs (B. McCullum 39, S. Fleming 38, S. Jayasuriya three for 21) lost to Sri Lanka 62 for one in 5.5 overs (S. Jayasuriya 51 not out). — Agencies
