Lalli tipped to head Prasar Bharati

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Baljeet Singh Lalli, Secretary (Border Management) in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, is tipped to be the next Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati.

A decision to this effect is understood to have been taken on Thursday by a committee chaired by Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

An Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officer of the 1971 batch, Mr. Lalli's appointment is subject to Vigilance clearance as per the requirements of the Prasar Bharati Act.

Mr. Lalli was one of the three IAS officers under consideration for the post; the other two being Additional Secretary in the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Pradeep Singh, and 1970 Maharashtra cadre official A. Das Gupta.

The post has been lying vacant for nearly six months following the retirement of former CEO K. S. Sarma. Besides the Vice-President, the three-member committee — set up under Section 4(i) of the Act — has Chairman of the Press Council of India Justice G. N. Ray and I and B Secretary S. K. Arora as its members. The committee had selected V. Shiv Kumar — a member of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited Board — as Member (Personnel) and IAS officer R. K. Jain as Member (Finance). The two posts had been lying vacant for a while now.
