MANGALORE: A conclave of members, presidents and vice-presidents of taluk panchayats in Dakshina Kannada district has expressed concern over gradual decline in allocation of development funds for the body. The meeting was organised under the aegis of the district unit of Taluk Panchayat Presidents', Vice-Presidents' and Members' Federation at the Mangalore Taluk Panchayat here on Wednesday. According to an official release here on Friday, the meeting discussed about the condition of taluk panchayats, and resolved to take steps to ensure that the panchayats had a bright future. The meeting decided to ensure overall development of all the five taluks in the district by ensuring closer cooperation among taluk panchayats and zilla panchayats, the release said. Gokuldas Shetty, president of Mangalore Taluk Panchayat, said that the panchayats used to receive Rs. 60 lakh in grant to undertake various development works. However, the grant had now declined to Rs. 8 lakh, he said. The share received by members for development of their constituency had come down to Rs. 2 lakh, he said. Formulating the Swarna Jayanthi Rozgar Yojana on the basis on population was not scientific, he said. The scheme should have been implemented on the basis of the size of an area, he said. Action plan of the panchayats had to be formulated equitably, Mr. Shetty said. Mr. Shetty also stressed on the need for the panchayats to have their own engineering staff.
