NEW DELHI: To speed up verification of records with the Finger Prints Bureau and save time on investigations, the Delhi police have acquired a fingerprint-based Computerised Remote Identification of Suspects (CRIS) system. The new system will enable the police to establish the identity of criminal by utilising the database of the Finger Prints Bureau. The Bureau has a database of more than 160,000 offenders. To begin with, nine police stations have been equipped with the new technology. Giving details, Police Commissioner K.K. Paul said the fingerprint of any suspect or criminal when put on the input device would scan the image and display the result on the screen within two to four minutes after searching the database. At present, the police stations have to send inked fingerprints to the Finger Prints Bureau. This consumes a lot of time and slows down the investigation process. The new system will not only help in saving time but would allow checking on an offender's record before presenting him in court. The CRIS system, based on inkless optical live scan technology, provides immediate results without manual intervention. "The system will be extended to all the police stations after its successful implementation in the first phase," said Dr. Paul adding that the first batch of officers had been trained to operate the system.
