Fears on Silk Board Bill allayed

BANGALORE: The Central Silk Board Amendment Bill, 2006 will not mean the end of subsidies and other benefits to sericulture farmers in the State, Central Silk Board Chairman H. Hanumanthappa has said.

Mr. Hanumanthappa and Minister for Sericulture Ramachandra Gowda, who met senior officers of the Sericulture Department and the Board, have allayed fears in several quarters that the draft rules pertaining to the amendment Bill would favour middlemen. The interests of farmers and the silk industry would be protected, they said.

Dharam Singh to be felicitated

BANGALORE: State Congress leaders and workers have decided to bring out a book titled "Ajathashatru N. Dharam Singh - 70" on Monday, the 70th birthday of Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly N. Dharam Singh.

The former Assembly Speaker Ramesh Kumar told presspersons here on Saturday that Mr. Singh would be felicitated at a function at Ambedkar Bhavan here on Monday.

Gulf Air expands IET network

BANGALORE: Following the successful implementation of Interline Electronic Ticketing (IET) with American Airlines, Gulf Air has included British Airways and Emirates (EK) in its e-ticketing network. Passengers can use a single e-ticket for journeys on the three airlines to destinations in the network.

"Gulf Air is on the fast track in its e-ticketing mission," a Gulf Air press release quoting its vice-president (Information Technology) Pauric Doyle, says.

"Gulf Air is one of the very few airlines to have completed e-ticketing in 70 per cent of its network. And we are well ahead in our plans to meet the International Air Transport Association deadline of December 31, 2007," says Mr. Doyle.

Bank staff stage dharna

BELLARY: The dharna by employees of the Pragathi Grameena Bank, under the banner of Joint Action Committee, entered its sixth day on Friday. Staff of the bank in Kolar participated in the dharna along with the local staff led by Anand Reddy, president of the Officers' Association, and Narayan, president of the employees union. Employees have been demanding among other things business-linked manpower policy, appointment on compassionate grounds and revision of benefits.

Girl knocked down

HASSAN: Divya, a three-year-old girl who was playing on a road in Hadaragere village under Yeskoor Police limits in Sakleshpur taluk, died when a vehicle ran over her on Friday. In another accident near Surpura under Arsikere rural police limits, A car rammed into a tree killing one of the occupants and injuring three. The deceased has been identified as Narayana Hollavar. The injured have been admitted to the Chikmagalur Government Hospital. The accident took place on Friday night. Investigations are on.

ATM inaugurated

BELLARY: C.M. Shirol, Chief Executive Officer of the Bellary Zilla Panchayat, inaugurated the Automatic Telling Machine (ATM) of the Andhra Bank installed on K.C. Road here on Friday. This is the first ATM to be installed in the district by the bank. Y. Prameela Rani, deputy general manager of the bank, and U.B. Sudhir Kumar, chief manager of the bank, were present.

Dharna

Hassan: Sanchar Nigam Executive's Association members led by president P.B. Kuruvatti, secretary Ramadas, treasurer Anupam Kumari and additional secretary Sanjay staged a dharna outside the BSNL office on Friday. Their demands include, merger of 50 per cent dearness allowance with basic pay, removal of ceiling on payment of gratuity, removal of 50 per cent ceiling on allowances among others. Mr. Kuruvatti said the Governmnet had failed to address their problems despite several appeals and added that if their problems were not settled before December 22, they would go on indefinite strike. Mr. Ramdas said they had submitted a memorandum to Minister for Communication and IT Dayanidhi Maran. — Staff Correspondent
