CHENNAI: The Bala Mandir Research Foundation, the parenting-centred organisation founded by freedom fighter S. Manjubhashini, has set up the Bala Mandir Resource Centre, a nodal point for knowing more about parenting and childcare.

The centre, opened to the public on Saturday, offers counselling on parenting, orientation and training programmes for parents, and discussions.

"We are also networking with voluntary organisations to help them access our resource materials and conduct regular meetings and seminars. Childcare and medical professionals can now share their expertise with parenting. We also offer reference services to other agencies as and when required," Maya Gaitonde, secretary of the foundation, said.

Among the various teaching and parenting aids available are books in various languages, recommended by the Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh Governments for use in balwadis. "Our main focus in on children below six years and also on early identification of disabilities. We are also networking with schools," Ms. Gaitonde said.

Earlier, delivering the S. Manjubhashini Memorial Seminar 2006 on `Every Child Needs Parenting', theatre personality P.C. Ramakrishna said the real joy of parenting lay in giving unconditional love to children and not in heaping unnecessary expectations on them. "Parents should provide an enabling environment for children to grow into complete human beings."

S. Anandalakshmy, president of the foundation, was present.

The resource centre is located at 8, G.N. Chetty Road, T.Nagar, and is open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every day.
