Plan to develop Tambaram station as hub
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
Southern Railway has planned to develop Tambaram as an important hub to decongest Egmore, Minister of State for Railways R.Velu has said. At a function held at the Tambaram railway station on Friday, he said Southern Railway had sent the Rs. 47-crore proposal to the Railway Board for developing Tambaram as a second hub, next to Egmore. The key components included construction of two additional platforms, improving passenger amenities and concourse and installation of high-mast lighting. Shortage of staff at ticket counters in East and West Tambaram would be sorted out by January 15, he said. Mr. Velu said rail connectivity would be provided between Puducherry and Mahe, and the new line would be inaugurated on January 3. The connecting trains would also link Puducherry with Yanam. A train link between Karaikal and Nagore would be established and the Puducherry Government agreed to pay half the project cost.
Broad gauge services between Thanjavur and Tiruvarur would be inaugurated on December 28. The Tiruchi-Pudukottai line would be dedicated by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on January 5.
