CAREFUL HANDLING: A policeman recovering an unexploded device in Puducherry on Saturday.
PUDUCHERRY: An unknown device exploded at Thengathittu, near the Upplam helipad, injuring a couple of people on Saturday. Villagers said they heard a big noise and soon a person came rushing to a nearby house and asked for water. He had blood on his face and hands. After that, they saw five youths going on a motorbike and in a car from the spot. An old man also sustained injuries and he too vanished from the scene within minutes. They said a few hours before the incident happened, five youths were spotted at the place. According to police, the old man was a bottle picker and he must have accidentally picked up the device. However, police could not confirm whether the youths got injured.
Not a country bomb
"The device was not a country bomb and it was only a cracker like thing. It could not be used to hurt people," said Chhaya Sharma, Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order). Another device from the spot had been recovered and an inquiry was on to find how it happened, she said. "We examined the recovered device and it was made of gun powder, pebbles wrapped in a piece of paper and cloth," she said. She said none of the injured had got treatment from any of the hospitals.
