NGO's call to protect Ousteri

Puducherry: The Puducherry-based Environment Protection Association has appealed to the Territorial Government to protect Ousteri, a major water body that had been meeting the irrigation requirements of farmers.

A resolution adopted at the executive committee meeting of the association on Thursday protested against the indiscriminate discharge of effluents by chemical industries.

The association said that a ban should be imposed on industries in the radius of five km around the tank.

In a release on Friday, association secretary K. Irisappan said there were also encroachments around the tank.

If the trend continued unchecked, there would be serious crisis in getting assured potable water in a major part of the town and its peripheral areas as Ousteri had been traditionally a source of water supply.
