Coimbatore: As many as 74 motor vehicle accident claim petitions were disposed of awarding a compensation of about Rs. 72 lakh at the continuous Lok Adalat held at Coimbatore and Tirupur on Saturday. This is the fourth continuous Lok Adalat being organised at Coimbatore and Tirupur as part of the initiative by the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, A.P. Shah, to extend speedy justice to litigants besides reducing the number of pending of cases under the Alternative Disputes Redressal System (ADRS). Officers of various insurance firms took part in the Adalat to expedite consent for the settlement. The three Lok Adalats at Coimbatore were presided by the judge of the Madras High Court, Justice P. Sathasivam, District Judge of the Essential Commodities Court, C.S. Murugan and Sessions Judge of the bomb blast cases court, K. Uthirapathy. The three adalats at Tirupur were presided by judge of the Madras High Court, Justice Chitra Venkataraman, Additional District Judge, Fast Track Court No IV-Tirupur, M.N. Mohammed Ali, and Additional District Judge, Fast Track Court No V-Tirupur, P.G. Rajagopal.

Justice Sathasivam in the presence of Justice Chitra Venkataraman inaugurated a Rs 5 lakh `Satta Udhavi Maiyam' (legal aid centre) at the Pollachi court complex on Saturday evening. Pollachi MLA, V. Jayaraman, Municipal Chairman, D. Rajeswari and the President and the Secretary of the Bar Association, G.A. Athipathy and A. Govindaraj, took part in the function. The MLA announced that he would equip the library at the centre with books worth Rs 5 lakh.
