STAR OF THE SHOW: K.S. Chitra
KOZHIKODE: The musical programme during the opening ceremony of the Malabar Shopping Festival started with K.S. Chitra singing "Kalabham tharam... ", one of her hits of the year, from the film `Vadakkumnathan,' at the Corporation Stadium on Friday night. There is something about her voice that demands, and captures, your attention from the second she starts singing. Though it was the fast numbers the majority of the huge crowd wanted to hear during the opening ceremony of the Malabar Shopping Festival, they could not have complained with whatever Chitra sang. Chitra sang just four full songs, but it was such a pleasure to listen to her, especially when she rendered "Paadariyen padippariyen... " (`Sindhu Bhairavi'), one of her biggest hits ever, for which she also won her first National award in 1986. Sharing the stage with her were Srinivas, Ganga, Afzal, George Peter, Nithya, Sunitha and Arun. One of the high points of the show was when Chitra, Srinivas, Afzal and Ganga together sang a medley of some lovely melodies. It opened on the right note with Chitra's "Uyire... " (`Bombay'), and was followed by Srinivas's rendition of another beautiful A.R. Rahman melody, "Nila kaikirathu... " (`Indira'). In a way, it was the medley, which also featured the immortal Madan Mohan composition "Naina barse... " (`Woh Kaun Thi') and "Enge enathu kavithai..." (`Kandukondein kandukondein'), both sung by Chitra, that ensured the show was melodious enough.
