Allay traders' apprehensions on VAT, says Jayalalithaa

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: General secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Jayalalithaa on Saturday urged the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government to take steps to allay the apprehensions of traders with regard to the implementation of the Value Added Tax (VAT) in the State.

In a statement here, she said the previous Government came out with notifications on VAT in 2003 and 2005 owing to continued pressure from and assurances and explanations given by the Union Finance Ministry.

Consistent stand

It had been the consistent stand of the AIADMK that the State would incur losses to the tune of Rs.5000 crore if VAT was implemented, Ms. Jayalalithaa said and denied that she was instigating the traders to agitate against VAT.
