CHENNAI: As the new moon for the month of Zulhaj was not sighted on December 21 (Thursday) Bakrid (Id-ul-zuha) will be celebrated on January 1 (Monday), according to State Government's chief kazi Salahuddin Mohammed Ayub. — Special Correspondent

Rathinavel Thevar statue to be unveiled

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will unveil the statue of P. Rathinavel Thevar, former municipal chairman of Tiruchi Municipality, in Tiruchi on January 28. According to statue formation committee chairman R.R. Gopalji, who met the Chief Minister here on Friday, the statue would be installed in Thevar Hall in the city. Late Thevar was the chairman of the municipality for 13 years. — Special Correspondent

Welfare board

CHENNAI: The Government will soon issue orders for implementing welfare board for six lakh village temple priests in the State.

Managing trustee of the Village Temple Priests Peravai S.Vedantham, who met the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi recently, said though the board was set up in 2001, it did not function in the last five years. When he brought this to the notice of the Chief Minister he agreed to do the needful. — Special Correspondent

3 fishermen missing

Nagercoil: Three fishermen from Vallavilai near Kollencode are reported missing for the last two days. According to sources, Albert (41), Mariyadhasan (35) and Vallerian (35) ventured into the sea for fishing on December 19 in a mechanised boat. The district administration has sought the assistance of the Coast Guard. — Staff Reporter

Special trains

CHENNAI: To clear the rush of passengers during Christmas, the Southern Railway is running the following special trains:

Chennai Central-Trivandrum Special: Chennai Central-Trivandrum Special (0658) will leave Chennai Central at 3-45 p.m. on December 25 and arrive Trivandrum at 6-45 a.m. the next day. The train will stop at Arakkonam, Katpadi, Jolarpet, Salem, Erode, Palakkad, Ottapalam, Trichur, Alwaye, Ernakulam Town, Kottayam, Chenganachery, Tiruvalla, Chengannur, Mavelikara, Kayankulam, Quilon and Varkala.

Bangalore-Chennai Central Special: Bangalore-Chennai Central Special (0688) will leave Bangalore at 11 p.m. on December 27 and arrive Chennai at 5-15 a.m. the next day. It will stop at Bangalore Cantonment, Krishnarajapuram, Whitefield, Bangarapet, Jolarpet, Ambur, Katpadi, Arakonam and Perambur.

Chennai Central-Bangalore Special: Chennai Central-Bangalore special (0687) will leave Chennat at 4-30 p.m. on December 24 and arrive Bangalore at 10 p.m. the same day. It will stop at Arakonam, Katpadi, Ambur, Jolarpet, Bangarapet, Whitefield, Krishnarajapuram and Banglaore Cantonment. — Special Correspondent

Record wheat handling

CHENNAI: The Chennai Port Trust handled a record 19,954 tonnes of wheat on Thursday. The record, set when the vessel Imperial Spirit discharged Australian wheat for the State Trading Corporation, bettered the previous maximum handling of 13,740 tonnes in a single day, a release said.

Exorbitant fare

TIRUCHI: The Transport Department has called upon the people to bring to its notice about the omni bus operators charging exorbitantly high fare during the Christmas holidays.

A statement of the Department issued here recently said that it has received complaints that the omni buses being operated from and via Tiruchi to various destinations were charging increased fare.

Two killed in accident

TIRUCHI: Two youthsof Kadiyakurichi were killed when the two-wheeler by which they were going to Tiruchi hit against an autorickshaw at Allur on the Tiruchi - Karur Highway on Saturday. The police said that the incident occurred when they tried to overtake a bus going to Tiruchi.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The water level in the Mettur Dam stood at 106.35 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 2,144 cusecs and the discharge, 12,000 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

Woman held for possessing ganja

Tuticorin: The police arrested Ramani (70), wife of Lotta, here on Friday, on a charge of possessing ganja. According to police, she was taken into custody with 1.5 kg of ganja kept in packets at Gandhi Nagar.

She was later remanded under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Two arrested for illegal sale of liquor

Tuticorin: Two persons were arrested in separate incidents at Pudukottai near here on Friday, when they attempted to sell liquor, illegally. In all, 16 bottles of rum and three bottles of whiskey were seized from the two accused.

The police said R. Arunachalam (57), an ex-serivceman, was taken into custody while he attempted to sell rum and whiskey, purchased from the Canteen Stores Depot (CSD) run by the Armed Forces, in the open market.

Another accused, Shanmugam (35), was arrested for selling rum brought from TASMAC shops. — Staff Reporter

Placed under suspension

ERODE: Joint Registrar of Cooperatives A.M. Jamsheed Basha conducted surprise raids on some fair price shops in the district a couple of days ago.

He found that a salesman in the shop run by the Avalpoondurai PACB had prepared bogus bills and sold ration rice at a premium price. He placed him under suspension and asked the PACB authorities to take disciplinary action against him.

Drowns in tank

ERODE: One person drowned in a water tank here on Friday. According to the police, Dinesh (25) of Kothagiri and Rajesh (28) of Villupuram, working in a private spinning mill near Punjai Puliampatty, were proceeding to Puliampatty from their work spot on a motorcycle.

While negotiating a curve, the vehicle fell into the Nallur tank. While Rajesh drowned, Dinesh escaped with minor injuries. - Staff Reporter
