A NEW BEGINNING: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda laying the foundation stone of the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology at Murthal in Sonepat on Saturday .

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Saturday announced plans to provide Rs.75 crore for the development of the Deen Bandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology at Murthal during the next three years to make it a centre of excellence on the pattern of the IITs.

Addressing a well-attended gathering at Murthal, he said that the seats reserved for the people of Murthal had also been increased from two to 10 so that more students from this area could get higher education.

He asserted that his regime had set up three universities in Sonepat district alone while the previous Governments did not sanction even a single Government college.

Mr. Hooda announced that in the upcoming Rajiv Gandhi Education City, 25 per cent seats would be reserved for students from the State and out of these five per cent meritorious students would be imparted free education while 10 per cent students would be able to get 50 per cent concession in fees and the remaining 10 per cent would get 25 per cent concession in fees.

Taking a dig at the opposition parties, he charged that the Indian National Lok Dal had opposed construction of the BML Hansi Butana Multipurpose Canal. These same leaders had also opposed the Rajiv-Longowal Accord so that construction of the SYL Canal could not be completed.

Mr. Hooda said no farmer would be arrested in future for recovery of cooperative loans and the rate of interest had been slashed from 14 per cent to 7 per cent.

He said compensation worth Rs.650 crore had been given to farmers for acquisition of their land for the Kundli-Manesar Expressway.
