KURNOOL: Work is in full swing at the Pothireddypadu head regulator in Kurnool district. The widening of canal is intended to increase the capacity of the head regulator from 11,500 cusecs to 44,000 cusecs. The package comprises widening of approach channel to a length of 3.2 km from the regulator deep into the reservoir, widening of Srisailam Right Main Canal (SRMC) to a length of 16.805 km up to Banakacharla cross regulator and construction of a new regulator with nine (plus one) gates. If everything goes well as per expectations of the executing firm, the regulator will be able to draw water at enhanced level by next year. The agency, which was awarded the work for Rs.201 crores, is planning to complete it in nine months while the time allowed is two years. The present regulator with three gates and one spare gate is designed to draw 11,500 cusecs. Even after putting up the nine-gate new regulator, the existing structure will remain as a stand-by.
Low-key work launch
Considering the opposition to the project, the launch of work was low-key. The machinery was also deployed in a moderate way. As expected, the executing agency had some problem with local farmers who opposed the work on the ground that their standing crops would be damaged. The contractor came forward to pay for the crops that were sown much before the work began.
