Aid for children hit by tsunami

KOLLAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will distribute financial assistance under the Prime Minister's Child Assistance Scheme for the Tsunami-affected Population to the beneficiaries in Alapad panchayat at a function at Azheekal on December 26, the second anniversary of the tsunami .

The assistance is given for two programmes. One is a fixed deposit scheme for children of Alapad who lost one of their parents in the tsunami. The amount is Rs. 51,000 a child. Twenty beneficiaries from Alapad have been identified for the scheme. The Chief Minister will give the necessary documents to five beneficiaries at the Alapad function.

The second programme is scholarships for the children in tsunami-affected areas. Children who lost any of their parents or hail from families that lost their livelihood implements in the tsunami are eligible for the scholarship. The scholarship amount is Rs. 300 a month with retrospective effect from January 1, 2006. A total of 2,235 students from Alapad have been identified for the scheme. The Chief Minister will hand over the amount to five beneficiaries at the Alapad function.

The Government has taken steps to build a memorial for tsunami victims on the private land on the sea front where 30 persons were cremated. It has purchased 35 cents of land at the rate of Rs. 12, 000 per cent. o construct a column in memory of the 132 persons killed by the tsunami in Kollam district.

At the December 26 function at Alapad, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, C. Divakaran, who is also the local MLA, will lay the foundation stone for the column.
