THENI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko has "temporarily" relieved the party's presidium chairman L. Ganesan and deputy general secretary Gingee N. Ramachandran of all posts and responsibilities for indulging in "anti-party activities."

Talking to mediapersons after a meeting of party's district secretaries at Cumbum near here on Saturday, Mr. Vaiko said they would continue as primary members of the party. "I took this decision on the basis of resolutions passed at a meeting in which district secretaries, members of the high-level committee, political advisory committee and governing council participated. From today, they have lost their right to take part in the general council, executive committee, administrative council, property protection council, governing council, high-level committee and political consultative committee meetings," he said.

    Information

Mr. Vaiko alleged that he had information that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam planned to distract the meeting of district secretaries scheduled for December 25 in Chennai with the help of the police. "Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi should own responsibility for all consequences," he said. A resolution passed at the party meeting appealed to Mr. Vaiko to expel both Mr. Ganesan and Mr. Ramachandran from the party as they, "in collusion with the DMK high command, indulged in anti-party activities." The meeting also gave Mr. Vaiko all powers to take action against them.

The meeting was presided over by treasurer M. Kannappan. A total of 32 out of 36 district secretaries took part and three gave consent letters to the party high command and one abstained.

Later, Mr. Vaiko continued his final leg of padayatra to Gudalur from Cumbum town.
