Peace in sight at Berhampur varsity

  • Promise to maintain peace on the campus
  • Vice-Chancellor hails decision

BERHAMPUR: The hope of peace returning to Berhampur University campus dawned on Saturday, as the warring students worked out a compromise following the mediation of the PG council of the university.

The university had to be closed on Thursday evening as tense situation prevailed due to rivalry between two student groups following union elections. PG council members led by its chairman Bijay Sahu managed to make the rival student groups realise that peace and sanctity on the campus was an immediate need.

    Joint statement

The warring student groups, which are affiliated to the NSUI and the Chhatra BJD, withdrew their FIRs lodged against each other at the Gopalpur police station. They also gave a joint written statement to the police in which they stated that they had reached a compromise and promised to maintain peace on the campus. The statement was signed by Student Welfare Club president Santosh Dash, general secretary L. Manohar, and Suchitra Palai and Rabinarayan Dash.

It is hoped that the developments would pave the way for reopening of the university in the first week of January.

    Doubts over fete

When contacted, the Vice-Chancellor of the university welcomed the decision of the students to maintain sanctity of the campus.

He, however, added that the date of reopening of the university would be taken at a meeting of the PG council after watching the situation for some days.

The closure of the university put a question mark on the annual celebrations of its foundation day on January 2.
