NEW DELHI: A 32-year-old man has been arrested by the Delhi police for allegedly stealing jewellery worth Rs. 15 lakhs from his employer's jewellery shop at Kotwali in North Delhi. The police have recovered the entire stolen jewellery from him. According to the police, Shankar Lal Soni, a resident of Gali Piao Wali, had given the keys of the jewellery shop to his servant, Chander Shekhar Sharma, to open it on November 17. However, when Mr. Soni reached his shop he found that Chander Shekhar was not around though the shop was open. When he did not return for a long time, Mr. Soni felt something amiss and checked the jewellery stock. He found that 13 small packets of diamonds and 15 gold chains were missing. While Mr. Soni suspected that Chander might be involved in the theft he did not report the matter to the police. He did so finally on December 7. During questioning, Chander, who had been employed at Mr. Soni's shop for the past eight years, gave varying statements. Following sustained interrogation, he allegedly confessed to having stolen the jewellery.
