Man gets death for rape, murder

Dehra Dun: A court here has sentenced to death an ice-cream seller for raping and murdering a seven-year-old girl in the city nine months ago.

Additional Sessions Judge Meena Tiwari in her order on Friday said Jia Lal had committed a heinous act which deserved capital punishment.

On March 15 this year, the girl went missing from her home in the Kanwali Road area here. The next day, the family lodged a missing report in this regard. Eyewitnesses said the girla was last seen with the ice-cream seller, who used to talk to her frequently, according to prosecution.

The police raided several areas before arresting Jia Lal, who during interrogation, confessed to have raped and killed the girl and threw her body in a vacant plot at Ballupur area of Dehra Dun. The police later recovered the body.

Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjay Gunjyal has announced a reward of Rs 2,500 each to four constables for solving the case quickly. PTI
