Call for corruption-free judiciary

Staff Reporter

KOCHI : People expect an efficient, corruption-free judicial system, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said.

Inaugurating the valedictory session of the seventh national conference of the Indian Association of Lawyers in Kochi on Saturday, he said that lawyers had an important role in the timely disposal of cases. "The judiciary has a major role to play in ensuring social justice. The poor and marginalised people have been badly affected by globalisation. Lawyers have to come to the rescue of the common man," Mr. Achuthanandan said.

Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Vijendra Jain said that millions of people continue to be poverty stricken in the globalised era. The former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Rajinder Sachar spoke about `The Constitution, globalisation and role of lawyers' in his valedictory address.

"The market-dominated globalisation has led to the poor getting marginalised further. The gap between haves and have-nots is increasing. A minuscule percentage of people own 85 per cent of the world's resources. Few people have access to good drinking water in most parts of the world.
