Murder case: one held

KOCHI: The Crime Branch Special Investigation Group-II on Friday arrested one person in connection with the murder of Mary, 65, an inmate of St. Teresa's Mercy Home, Kacheripadi.

The murder was committed on June 16, 2004. The case was handed over to Crime Branch after the local police investigation failed to make any breakthrough.

The man arrested was identified as Raja, 33, of Puthukotta in Tamil Nadu.

According to the police, the accused went to the scene of crime to steal aluminium sheets which was being used there as part of ongoing renovation works.

The accused accidentally ran into the victim and attacked her when she tried to raise alarm.

On finding that the victim was dead, he made off after taking her gold ornaments weighing eight sovereigns.

The accused was arrested from near the Ernakulam North Railway overbridge. He was produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate I on Saturday.
