KOCHI: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has said that the CPI(M), which is power in the Kochi Corporation for the past 27 years, has failed in finding a solution to the garbage management of the city. Inaugurating a meeting organised by the UDF to protest against the crisis in garbage disposal in the city here on Saturday, Mr. Chandy said the problem occurred not because of any lack of funds, but due to the lack of any sense of direction on the LDF's part. He said the Corporation had been offered enough funds in the form of ADB loan as well as part of the JNNURM projects. But, the corporation refused to accept the ADB loan citing inability to pay back the amount. Even after the former UDF Government assured that the Government would pay back the loan, the corporation had rejected it. Now, while Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and the CPI were against the ADB loan, a section in the CPI(M) was for accepting the loan, which revealed the lack of coordination among the LDF on the issue, said Mr. Chandy. It was time that the ADB assistance was extended to the municipalities as the garbage processing was poised to become a general issue all over the State. He said the LDF had failed in taking forward projects like the Vallarpadam Container Transhipment Terminal project and the Smart City project.
