Elected office-bearers

KOCHI: The seventh National Conference of the Indian Association of Lawyers has elected the former Supreme Court Judge V.R. Krishna Iyer and T.M. Mohammed Yousuf as president and general secretary. The former Supreme Court Chief Justice P.N. Bhagwati is the working president. The former Supreme Court Judges S.C. Aggarwal and P.B. Sawant, senior lawyers K.K. Venugopal and P.P. UDF criticises Chief Minister

KOCHI: United Democratic Front (UDF) convener P.P. Thankachan has said that the absence of Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and Ports Minister M. Vijayakumar at a meeting attended by the Union Minister for Ports T.R. Baalu held here recently was `unfortunate'. Mr. Thankachan said the Chief Minister and Mr. Vijayakumar should have attended the meeting in which the development of major and minor ports, including Vizhinjam and Vallarpadam were discussed. — Staff Reporter

Chamber protest

KOCHI: The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has protested against the recent decision of the Commercial Taxes Department to collect advance tax at the check posts at the time of import into the State in the case of 12 notified commodities. The chamber secretary said such a step would create difficulties for the dealers. — Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A seven-day Sri Sathya Sai Adhyathmika Vichara Sathram-2006, organised by the Sathya Sai Seva Organisation, Ernakulam, will be inaugurated by the former Kerala High Court Judge P.C.B. Menon on Sunday at Ernakulathappan Hall. — Staff Reporter

Drisya award nite

KOCHI: The 9th Drisya Television Award Nite, organised by the Malayalam Television Viewers Association, will be held on Monday at Kerala Fine Arts Hall. A four-hour-long stage show, directed by Roy Manappallil, will be held. More than 30 awards in different categories will be announced at the function. — Staff Reporter
