SOUGHT-AFTER: Christmas cribs made from herbs are high in demand in Kochi. Photo: Vipinchandran
KOCHI : Taking into account the popularity of materials made with ethnic, natural and organic products, a young man has come up with a Christmas crib made from 16 herbs. Most of them have medicinal value. The items used are patimukham, neem, kasturi manjal, karuva, nutmace, pepper, cloves, cardamom, ramacham, vayambu, kachcholam, muthanga, paddy and panayola. The natural crib has been priced Rs.1,500 to Rs.2,000. There is a bulb inside, to light up the interiors. A wooden stand is an option. "It lasts for over five years," says Saji G, who assembled the crib. It has been put on show at `Odds and Ends,' Rajaji Road. "So far, I have sold 180 such cribs. Ramacham dominates the interior. The fragrance of the herbs spreads in the room where it has been exhibited," he says. He began making value-added products from coconut when he was employed with an advertisement agency in Kochi. Two years ago he got an order for garlands made of coloured dry leaves. It was then that Mr. Saji toyed with the idea of making cribs from natural products instead of buying Chinese-made artificial cribs.
