Adopting the path of top national law schools, Osmania University Law College, has decided to introduce five-year law course from the next academic year. The pre-requisite for the course is a pass in Intermediate and admissions will be based on LAWCET-2007 to be conducted on May 27, 2007. The Bar Council as well as Osmania University have approved of the decision and even the inspection was completed last year. The OU Academic Senate that met on December 16 also discussed the modalities and other administrative aspects.
Poor attendance
Sources in the university say that the college is facing a serious problem with poor attendance of LLB students who join the course mostly for hostel accommodation rather than gaining a professional degree. However, the university expects that students seriously interested in law profession will come through the five-year course. The course introduced last year in the evening college at Nizam College premises is already a hit. Officials feel that the five-year course is the in-thing and it is popular in all top national law schools in the country including NALSAR Law University. The 14th Law Commission, headed by M.C. Setalvad, first Attorney General, recommended its introduction in 1967 itself. "There will be no pre-law or post-law course and the syllabus is integrated to ensure that students study law subjects from the first year itself," a professor said. Five-year course students will be given an option of moving out after three years with a BA ((law) degree if they wish to.
